When Dr McCoy accidentally overdoses on an injection he develops madness and paranoia symptoms. Kirk and Mr Spock chase after him but they're too late from stopping him leaping into a time machine called "The Guardian of Forever", altering the past and erasing history
They follow him and are transported to New York City in the 1930's where they meet social worker Edith Keeler (played by Joan), from the 21st Street Mission, who Kirk falls in love with.
However to set history back to the right time, Spock and Kirk discover that Edith will die when she is hit by a fast moving truck. McCoy tries to save her, but Kirk stops him.
